The Edmonton Oilers entered Monday night's contest on home ice at Rogers Place against the visiting Los Angeles Kings on the heels of a comeback 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, their fourth win in their last five.

Meanwhile, the Kings entered with a 3-1 record in their last four games; they also had a home game at Crypto.com Arena postponed due to the devastating wildfires that have spread throughout the Los Angeles area in recent days.

When the dust settled, it was the Oilers continuing their mastery of the Kings, enjoying a 1-0 victory to improve to 27-13-3; the Kings fell to 24-12-5.

Neither team found the back of the net in the game's opening 20 minutes of play, and they remained scoreless through most of the second period until superstar Oilers captain Connor McDavid broke the ice with his 17th goal of the season.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper on the bench for an extra attacker, the Kings pressed late in the third period for the tying marker, but came up short.

3 most impressive Edmonton Oilers players from 1-0 win over Los Angeles Kings

#1. Stuart Skinner

The biggest question mark that the Oilers had coming into the current season was their goaltending. While Skinner has shown that he, at times, can be a reliable goaltender, he's not regarded as one of the better players in his position in the game.

However, he silenced his doubters – if just for a night – on Tuesday against the Kings. He turned aside everything that the Kings threw at him, including six shots from Adrian Kempe, five shots from former Oilers forward Warren Foegele, and three from Kevin Fiala.

His first period save on Kempe was his finest of the game:

His shutout was the second of the season and just the sixth of his NHL career.

#2. Leon Draisaitl

The ying to Connor McDavid's yang, Leon Draisaitl didn't pick up a goal during the contest but demonstrated why he's one of the best players in the game.

He outmuscled Kings forward Trevor Moore in the neutral zone for a loose puck and carried it behind the net, setting up the chance for defenseman Darnell Nurse. The shot was stopped by Kuemper, only to have McDavid bang home the rebound.

Draisaitl picked up the secondary assist, though he was the main catalyst for the goal.

#3. Connor McDavid

The Oilers captain, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday, picked up the juicy rebound of Darnell Nurse's shot and made no mistake, firing it past a diving Kuemper for the game's first goal.

It was a fitting present for McDavid, who is on pace to once again easily eclips the 100-point mark.

McDavid and Co. will look to keep their winning momentum going when they face the Minnesota Wild next at Xcel Energy Center on Wednesday.
