The Edmonton Oilers welcomed back captain and superstar forward Connor McDavid on Monday night against the Seattle Kraken, marking his first game since being suspended for three outings owing to his cross-check to Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland's face.

They faced a Kraken team determined to return to the playoffs and entered the game with a 3-1 record in their last four.

However, it was the Oilers and McDavid who got the last laugh at Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton, winning by a 4-2 final score and improving their record to 32-15-3; meanwhile, the Kraken fell to 22-26-3.

The game started well for the Kraken, who reached the scoreboard first thanks to the third goal of the season for Eeli Tolvanen. The Oilers responded with just the second goal of the year from Mattias Janmark, only to see the Kraken re-take the lead thanks to Vince Dunn's 10th goal.

As fate would have it, McDavid rose to the occasion and scored on his return to knot the score at 2-2 early in the second period.

The Oilers then took the lead for good thanks to veteran Corey Perry's ninth goal of the season; it proved to be the game-winner. Defenseman Mattias Ekholm added an empty net goal late in regulation, his seventh goal of the season.

Joey Daccord made 27 saves in a losing effort for the Kraken, while Calvin Pickard made 26 saves in the win.

#1. Connor McDavid

You just weren't going to keep him down for long. Already regarded as the best player in the NHL, McDavid nearly blew the roof off Rogers Place with his second period goal, picking up his own rebound and banging it past Daccord:

The Oilers made no secret about the fact they couldn't disagree more strongly with the NHL's decision to suspend McDavid for three games, but there's nothing that can be done about that now.

McDavid is back and didn't appear rusty at all – which could be bad news for the rest of the Oilers' opponents.

#2. Mattias Ekholm

The physical-minded defenseman chipped in offensively for the Oilers, always a welcome sight. He scored a goal while adding an assist, finishing with a +1 rating and firing six shots on goal.

#3. Calvin Pickard

Pickard isn't the flashiest of goaltenders, but he can get the job done when called upon. He was solid in net for the Oilers, making 26 saves including a handful of high-percentage chances.

He stopped four of five shots from Dunn while also denying all four shots from Oliver Bjorkstrand as well as three each from Jayden Schwartz and John Hayden.

McDavid and Co. will be in action again when they host the Detroit Red Wings next at Rogers Place on Thursday.
