The Edmonton Oilers entered the Windy City for Saturday night's game against the host Chicago Blackhawks having won four of their last five games but had their winning streak halted by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks had just dropped a 5-3 decision to the Detroit Red Wings 24 hours prior in Detroit. They entered Saturday's game having gone back and forth with a 2-3 record in their last five.
When the dust settled, the Oilers ultimately earned their fifth win in six games and did so in comeback fashion. Things started well enough for the Blackhawks, who scored the first two goals of the game in the first period thanks to Teuvo Teravainen and Nick Foligno; they took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Oilers halved Chicago's lead 22 seconds into the second period thanks to Vasily Podkolzin's fifth goal of the season, only to have the Blackhawks restore the two-goal lead when Ryan Donato scored his second goal in as many games.
However, a pair of Oilers veterans knotted the score in short order; Adam Henrique and former Blackhawks forward Corey Perry scored within two minutes of one another. Just before the midway point of the third period, Edmonton seized the lead for good after Zach Hyman notched his 14th goal, scored on the power play.
Pressing as they would with goaltender Arvid Soderblom on the bench for an extra attacker, the Blackhawks were unable to draw even.
3 most impressive Edmonton Oilers players from 4-3 win over Chicago Blackhawks
#1. Vasily Podkolzin
Playing in his first full season with the Oilers, Podkolzin is making the most of his opportunity and has his eyes set on reaching his highest career total in goals since his rookie year of 2021-22 (14) with the Vancouver Canucks.
He scored Edmonton's first goal of the game and later added an assist, finishing +2 in the win over Chicago.
#2. Zach Hyman
Hyman, who scored a career-high 54 goals last season, started this campaign far slower and is on pace to come nowhere close to that total.
However, he's recently been able to improve his goal totals, reaching his 14th against the Blackhawks; it was also the game-winning tally.
He now has 11 goals since December 4.
#3. Leon Draisaitl
One of the best players in the NHL, Draisaitl continues his incredible statistical output in 2024-25.
With his pair of assists, he now has 32 for the season and is on pace to reach 124 points, which would be the most since he registered 128 in 2022-23.
