The Edmonton Oilers dropped their first game in the three-game suspension to superstar captain Connor McDavid earlier this week, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Washington Capitals.
They were back in action on Thursday night on home ice against the visiting Vancouver Canucks, ironically the first matchup between the two teams since the raucous that resulted in the suspensions not only to McDavid but to Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers.
The Oilers would ultimately pull out the win comfortably, winning a 6-2 decision and improving to 30-15-3, while the Canucks fell to 20-17-10.
The game started Edmonton's way, as Zach Hyman gave them the night's first goal; it was his 16th of the season. Before the period expired, the Oilers increased their lead to 3-0 thanks to goals from Leon Draisaitl and Adam Henrique; they were the 35th and seventh goals of the season for them, respectively.
Hyman would once again strike for Edmonton in the second period, scoring his 17th and increasing the lead to 4-0. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got in on the fun, scoring on the power-play for his 13th goal.
Vancouver finally responded thanks to a pair of quick goals from Brock Boeser and Filip Hronek.
Kasperi Kapanen finished the scoring for the Oilers, who got 24 saves in a winning effort from Calvin Pickard. Meanwhile, Thatcher Demko made 28 saves for the Canucks.
3 most impressive Edmonton Oilers players from 6-2 win over Vancouver Canucks
#1. Leon Draisaitl
Taking the responsibility of shouldering the load while McDavid is absent, Draisaitl once again came through with a vintage performance.
He finished the game with a goal and two assists, tied for the team-high three points on the night.
It was Draisaitl who immediately confronted Garland even after McDavid's cross-check to said's face, and he spoke openly about disagreeing with the NHL's decision to suspend him for the next three games.
But until then, he is doing his part to make sure McDavid's absence isn't felt too strongly.
#2. Zach Hyman
Another Oilers forward who finished with three points on the night, Hyman is beginning to round into form and is looking more and more like the player who scored a career-high 54 goals last season.
He scored twice and notched an assist, finishing with a +2 rating and a team-high six shots on goal.
#3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Another player that the Oilers need to step up while McDavid is absent, Nugent-Hopkins did just that against the Canucks.
Finishing with a goal and an assist, Nugent-Hopkins was all over the ice for Edmonton.
The Oilers will look to keep their winning momentum going when they host the Buffalo Sabres next at Rogers Place on Saturday.
