The Montreal Canadiens recorded back-to-back wins having already ticked the win column on Tuesday thanks to their overtime triumph over the visiting New York Islanders.
They won their second straight game on Thursday, defeating the struggling Nashville Predators by a 3-0 final score. Their win added to the misery of the new-look Predators, who are off to one of the most eyebrow-raising slow starts in recent memory considering their offseason free-agent haul.
Jake Evans opened the scoring, striking shorthanded to give the Canadiens the 1-0 lead just before the midway point of the first period.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period, but that quickly changed early in the game's final frame. Patrik Laine, who scored in his Habs debut against the Islanders on Tuesday, picked up his second goal in as many games to double the lead.
With Nashville desperately trying to break Sam Montembeault's shutout night, Joel Armia scored into the Predators' vacated net to seal the win.
Montembeault made 29 saves for his third shutout of the season, while Justus Annunen stopped 27 shots in his Predators debut after being acquired from the Avalanche last week.
3 most impressive Montreal Canadiens players from 3-0 win over Nashville Predators feat. Patrik Laine
#3. Jake Evans
Evans continues to prove his worth as a valuable defensive-minded forward, as he struck for the Habs with a player in the penalty box:
Instead of Nashville striking on the power play, Evans instead broke the ice for the host Canadiens, setting the stage for their eventual victory.
#2. Sam Montembeault
The Montreal goaltender has battled consistency issues this season, which has included a record-setting shutout on Opening Night against the Toronto Maple Leafs and being yanked from the net after a poor performance.
His win against the Islanders on Tuesday broke a three-game winless skid for him, and he's now picked up his second straight victory.
#1. Patrik Laine
The former No. 2 overall draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 2016, Laine has only played in two games with the Habs so far this season after getting hurt in exhibition play.
However, he's made the most of them, having picked up goals now in both games and looking more and more comfortable with his new teammates.
If he can continue this scoring pace reminiscent of his days with the Jets, the Canadiens may have pulled off one of the steals of the offseason in their trade to acquire him from the Blue Jackets.
Laine and Co. host the Washington Capitals next at Bell Centre on Saturday.
