The Montreal Canadiens aimed to continue their impressive streak when they arrived in the American capital city for a matchup against the Washington Capitals on Friday night.
The Capitals had won three of their last six games and were coming off a 2-1 overtime victory over the visiting Vancouver Canucks.
In the end, the Habs would stay hot and earn another victory, defeating the Capitals 3-2 in overtime and improving to 20-18-3, while the Capitals fell to 27-10-5.
The Capitals didn't have to wait long to get on the scoreboard, as Jakob Chychrun tallied his 12th goal of the season while Washington enjoyed the man advantage; they took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
However, the Habs would counter in the second period thanks to the red-hot Cole Caufield, who scored his 23rd goal; before Josh Anderson gave Montreal the lead with his seventh goal, scored shorthanded.
Former Canadiens forward Lars Eller, who is in his second tour of duty with Washington, knotted the score early in the third period. Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of regulation, setting up sudden-death overtime.
And it was the Montreal captain who seized the opportunity when it presented itself:
Montreal has now won three straight games.
3 most impressive Montreal Canadiens players from 3-2 OT win over Washington Capitals
#1. Cole Caufield
The goal-scoring forward is coming into his own this season and took it upon himself to honor the late Johnny Gaudreau by switching his jersey number to No. 13 in his honor.
So far, he's made it count. His goal against the Capitals was his team-leading 23rd of the season, and he's played a huge role in Montreal scratching and clawing their way into a postseason spot.
#2. Nick Suzuki
The Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki did it all for his club against the Capitals, not only scoring the game-winning goal but also finishing with a +2 rating and six shots on goal.
#3. Jakub Dobes
Dobes certainly doesn't look like a rookie goaltender in the National Hockey League. Promoted to the backup position after the Canadiens waived Cayden Primeau, Dobes has played with the poise of a seasoned veteran between the pipes.
He stopped Alex Ovechkin once, two attempts from Tom Wilson, and four attempts from John Carlson as part of the victory.
The Montreal Canadiens will be in action again when they host the Dallas Stars next at Centre Bell on Saturday.
