The New York Rangers found themselves matched up against the bitter rivals, the New Jersey Devils, on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers entered the contest on the heels of having blown a 3-0 lead earlier in the week against the Dallas Stars and losing 5-4 in overtime.
Meanwhile, the Devils entered the contest with struggles of their own, having dropped four of their last five games.
The Rangers managed to add to the recent struggles of the Devils, defeating them 3-2 in overtime after overcoming a 2-1 deficit; the win improved New York's record to 19-20-2, while the Devils fell to 25-15-4.
Rangers defenseman Adam Fox opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first period with just his second goal of the season; New York took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
But the Devils would take the lead thanks to goals Jake Hughes and Jesper Bratt; the tallies were their 16th and 15th of the season, respectively.
Artemi Panarin responded on the power-play with his 17th goal, once again knotting the score.
With both teams unable to find the back of the net in the third period, it was Sam Carrick who played the role of hero in overtime. He scored the deciding goal to secure the extra point for the Rangers.
Making his return to action, goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 21 saves. His counterpart Jacob Markstrom made 29 saves in a losing effort.
3 most impressive New York Rangers players from 3-2 OT win over New Jersey Devils
#1. Igor Shesterkin
Shesterkin had missed the last several games due to injury and was placed on Injured Reserve.
However, his return between the pipes for the Rangers was a successful one. Despite allowing a pair of second period goals, Shesterkin largely held the Devils at bay and made several key saves.
#2. Sam Carrick
Of all the players that fans would have guessed to provide the overtime winner for their club, Carrick would likely be one of the last names they picked.
But it was in fact Carrick who notched the winning goal for the Rangers; just his third goal of the season.
While not relied upon for offense, Carrick will certainly take time to enjoy the fact that he secured the extra point for his club.
#3. Adam Fox
The top Rangers defenseman has been struggling to score this season, but came through with the opening goal of the game.
He'll gain confidence from his goal, something that will only help him moving forward.
