The New York Rangers entered Sunday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks having fallen several games below the .500 mark after an inexplicable slide.

The Blackhawks had managed to get back on the winning side of things after an embarrassing 6-2 loss in the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field; they beat the Montreal Canadiens in their most recent game.

But rather than build on that win, the Blackhawks fell right back into a state of despair. The Rangers handed them their second 6-2 loss in three games, and improved to 18-20-1. The Blackhawks fell to 13-25-2, good for last place in the Western Conference.

Chicago scored first with Tyler Bertuzzi's 14th goal of the season. But it was all Rangers from that point, as they scored five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. Jonny Brodsinzki, Will Borgen, Filip Chytil, Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck all lit the lamp for the Rangers.

The Blackhawks finally responded with Wyatt Kaiser's first goal of the year, only to have Chytil restore the four-goal lead with his second of the game in the third period.

Louis Domingue, making his 1st start of the season for the Rangers, made 25 saves in a winning effort. Meanwhile, Arvid Soderblom let in six goals on 34 shots.

#1. Filip Chytil

The Rangers needed their secondary scoring to come through for them and it did against the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

While not normally relied upon as a main source of offense, Chytil had his first two-goal-game of the season and increased his total to 10.

#2. Louis Domingue

Called from the American Hockey League affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack on New Year's Eve after an injury to Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers started Louis Domingue for the first time this season. He came through despite allowing an early goal, making 25 saves on the 27 shots he faced.

He earned his 1st NHL win since November of 2023; Rangers fans still remember him well from his performance against them as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

#3. Mika Zibanejad

A Rangers forwad who has earned considerable scrutiny for his performance this season, Mika Zibanejad played a key role in two of New York goals.

His screen on Soderblom helped make Brodzinski's goal possible, while it was his stretch pass to Smith that set the stage for New York's fourth goal of the game.
