The Pittsburgh Penguins notched an important 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night at KeyBank Center. The game was highlighted by an unusual feat as Penguins’ netminder Alex Nedeljkovic scored an empty-net goal to seal the win.

Rickard Rakell (PPG), Anthony Beauvillier, Cody Glass (PPG) and Bryan Rust (PPG) got the tallies for the Penguins. Meanwhile, Owen Power (PPG) and Zach Benson replied for the Sabres.

Here's a closer look at the three most impressive Pittsburgh Penguins players from Friday night’s win over the Buffalo Sabres.

#3. Cody Glass

Fourth-line center Cody Glass earned the game’s second star after scoring a goal and adding an assist on the night. Glass hit the ice for 22 shifts totaling nearly 13 minutes of ice time. That’s not a bad total for a fourth-liner.

It’s worth pointing out that Glass rewarded coach Mike Sullivan’s faith by scoring on the power play. Glass ended the game a plus-1 with three shots on goal. Moving forward, Glass should become an increasingly meaningful player in the Pens’ bottom six.

#2 Bryan Rust

Bryan Rust continues to have a solid season for the Penguins. Rust ended the night with a goal and an assist while playing in over 18 minutes. He skated in 25 shifts, notching a power play goal of his own.

Rust made the most of his chances as he registered two shots on goal, one of them being a goal. He looked solid on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell. Rust is nearly a point-per-game player, helping the Penguins get back into the playoff conversation in the Eastern Conference.

#1. Alex Nedeljkovic

Alex Nedeljkovic had the game of his life. He made 40 saves to preserve the win for the Penguins. He made key saves in the third period as Buffalo pushed to tie the game, outshooting the Pens by a lopsided 19-3 mark in the third.

In total, the Sabres got 42 shots on goal, with Nedeljkovic holding the fort. But Nedeljkovic also helped his own cause by scoring the 19th goal by a netminder in NHL history and getting an assist on Glass’ power play marker in the second period.

All told, Nedeljkovic got it done at both ends of the ice. His unique performance on Friday night will undoubtedly go down as one for the ages in NHL history.

The Penguins will have little time to relax as they take on the Washington Capitals next at Capital One Arena on Saturday.
