The Montreal Canadiens faced the Vegas Golden Knights in the third round of the 2020-21 Stanley Cup playoffs. They defeated the Golden Knights in Game 6 to earn their first finals berth since 1993.

Since then, both teams have moved in opposite directions. The Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup in 2023 and have remained a force in the Western Conference, while the Canadiens have yet to return to the postseason since that miracle run of 2021.

And while the only reward from Tuesday's regular season matchup between the two teams was a pair of points in the standings rather than a postseason victory, the Canadiens can feel good about securing a 3-2 win at T-Mobile Arena.

The Golden Knights took a 2-0 lead into their dressing room after the opening 20 minutes of play, thanks to goals from Zach Whitecloud and Noah Hanifin.

However, the Habs fought their way back to knot the score at 2-2 thanks to Cole Caufield's 19th goal of the season in the second period, followed by the tying marker from Emil Heineman just before the midway point of the third period.

Kirby Dach then broke the 2-2 tie with his fifth goal of the season, which eventually stood up as the game-winner.

Habs goaltender Sam Montembeault made 27 saves, while Adin Hill was limited to 19 saves.

3 most impressive players from Montreal Canadiens' 3-2 win over Vegas Golden Knights

#1. Kirby Dach

The bottom-six Canadiens forward has already bested last year's total of four goals; his third-period goal against Vegas was his fifth of the season.

He toe-dragged the puck around a sliding Golden Knights defenseman and deposited the puck through the pads of Hill for the game-winning goal.

#2. Cole Caufield

Before the season began, Caufield announced that he was switching his jersey number to #13 in honor of the late Johnny Gaudreau, who was tragically killed along with his brother Matthew in late August.

Caufield has done an excellent job honoring Gaudreau's memory this season, racing out of the gate with a career-high 41-goal pace. His tally in the second period got the Canadiens back into the game and set the stage for their third-period comeback.

#3. Sam Montembeault

Montembeault much more closely resembled the starting goaltender that the Habs envisioned he could be when they traded away Jake Allen at the trade deadline last season.

After allowing two first-period goals, Montembeault settled down and held down the fort the rest of the way for Montreal and is responsible as much as any player for giving them a chance to come back and earn two points, which they ultimately did.
