The Philadelphia Flyers picked up a massive two points in a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday at the Prudential Center. The Flyers improve to 21-20-6 (48 points), while the Devils fall to 26-16-6 (58 points).
Philly has been hot entering Saturday's action with points in four consecutive games, going 3-0-1 in that stretch. They need every point they can get while in the thick of the Eastern Conference wild-card race, making this afternoon's win that much sweeter.
It didn't begin how they would have hoped for, as Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton opened the scoring just 2:17 into the game on a wicked wrister from the point. Philadelphia managed eight shots in the opening frame but couldn't get one by goaltender Jake Allen.
Philly got off to a great start in the second as rookie Matvei Michkov buried a breakaway goal less than two minutes into the frame. The remainder of the period was relatively uneventful, and the teams headed into the intermission tied 1-1.
New Jersey thought they had regained the lead early in the final frame courtesy of Jesper Bratt, but John Tortorella challenged for offside, and the goal was overturned.
After managing to fend off a push from the Devils, the Flyers took the lead on the power play. Noah Cates found Bobby Brink all alone to make it 2-1. Samuel Ersson then held the fort to finish off the game, allowing Travis Konecny to end it on an empty net goal.
The Flyers will get back on the horse when they return home to take on the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center.
Let's have a look at the three most impressive player performances from Philadelphia's 3-1 win this afternoon in New Jersey.
3 most impressive players from the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils
#1. Noah Cates
Noah Cates played a vital role in the Philadelphia Flyers' upset victory in New Jersey. Cates assisted on the game-winning goal while being a +1 rating to go with four blocked shots in 17:24 of ice-time. The 25-year-old won nine faceoffs on Saturday and played important defensive minutes against the New Jersey Devils' best players.
#2. Bobby Brink
Bobby Brink was on the receiving end of Cates' pass to bury the game-winner on the power play. Brink played more than 14 minutes, where he racked up one goal and two shots on the net. The 23-year-old also took on some key defensive responsibilities, helping neutralize one of the most potent offensive teams in the NHL.
#3. Samuel Ersson
It was a quiet game for Samuel Ersson, but he came up big when it mattered most. The Flyers netminder made 12 saves on 13 shots in what was a low-event game. It was Ersson's fourth consecutive win, improving his record to 13-7-2 for the 2024-25 season. He appears to be taking over the crease as the number-one goaltender in Philly.
