The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up another victory on home ice, taking down the struggling Anaheim Ducks by a 3-2 final score at Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto.
The win improved Toronto to 18-9-2 so far in the 2024-25 NHL season, while the Ducks fell to 10-14-4; the Leafs now lead the Atlantic Division in points.
Things started well enough for the Leafs in the opening period thanks to goals from Max Pacioretty and William Nylander; the tallies were their third and 18th of the season, respectively.
But with just under five minutes remaining in the opening period, the Ducks halved Toronto's lead thanks to a power-play goal from Frank Vatrano.
Just past the midway point of the second period, Pacioretty would score his second goal of the game and fourth of the season, increasing Toronto's lead to 3-1. Just over a minute later, the Ducks would respond with a Jackson LaCombe goal, cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Ducks were unable to gain the equalizer despite pulling goaltender Lukas Dostal for a sixth attacker late in regulation.
The Maple Leafs also got a scare in the first period when starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz departed with a lower-body injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game by the team.
What three members of the Maple Leaf had their performances stand out the most in their win over the Ducks?
3 most impressive Toronto Maple Leafs from 3-2 win over Anaheim Ducks
#1. Max Pacioretty
The former Montreal Canadiens captain is now a member of their bitter Original Six rival, something he likely thought would never happen earlier in his career.
Pacioretty hasn't had the smoothest of years with Toronto, having missed several games due to injury and also getting called out by head coach Craig Berube.
But Thursday's game marked his first two-goal effort with his new club and helped power the Leafs to a win.
#2. Joseph Woll
It's never easy for a goaltender to enter a game cold, but Woll's services were called upon after the injury to Stolarz and the subsequent announcement that he'd be unable to return to action.
Woll was calm and collected in net, making 19 saves on the 20 shots he faced.
#3. William Nylander
Continuing to help carry the Toronto offense, Nylander impressed yet again by scoring his 18th goal of the year; he also leads the team in goals.
The Maple Leafs take on the Detroit Red Wings next at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday.
