For the second time this season, former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe had a chance to exact some revenge against the club that terminated his contract over the summer.
But once again, he and the New Jersey Devils came up short against Toronto. The visiting Maple Leafs defeated the Devils by a 2-1 final score in overtime thanks to captain Auston Matthews' breakaway goal and a stellar net performance by goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
The win improved the Maple Leafs to 17-9-2, while the Devils dropped to a similar record of 18-10-3.
New Jersey found the back of the net first during the contest thanks to Ondrej Palat's fourth goal of the year, while Jesper Bratt picked up his 25th assist.
Neither team reached the scoresheet in the second period, setting up a tense final frame. Midway through the third, Pontus Holmberg took advantage of a Devils miscue and scored shorthanded to tie the game.
In overtime, it was Matthews who had the game on his stick on a breakaway attempt and made the most of it.
3 most impressive Toronto Maple Leafs players from 2-1 OT win over Devils feat. Anthony Stolarz
#1. Anthony Stolarz
In perhaps his finest start as a member of the Leafs since joining them during the summer fresh off winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers, Stolarz impressed with a 38-save performance and could easily be considered the No. 1 star of the contest.
#2. Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Speaking of Stanley Cup winners with the Panthers this past spring, Ekman-Larsson also joined the Leafs with Stolarz as a free agent. He led the Leafs in ice time with just under 25 minutes, while also earning a +1 rating.
#3. Auston Matthews
The Leafs captain, who missed a chunk of the season due to an upper-body injury, made the most of his breakaway attempt after a fantastic save by Stolarz gave him the opportunity.
He was able to beat towering goaltender Jacob Markstrom up high from in tight, sealing the extra point for the Leafs.
Naturally, it was a good feeling for Auston Matthews.
"Yeah, that felt really good. Couldn't quite seem to find my spot there a couple times, but just tried to stick with it," Matthews said postgame via NHL.com. "He's a big guy, takes up a lot of the net, so I was kinda guessing he was gonna go down and just try to lift it."
The Maple Leafs return home to face the Anaheim Ducks next from Scotiabank Arena on Thursday.
