The Toronto Maple Leafs avenged their loss late last month to the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena, overcoming New York by a 2-1 final score at UBS Arena on Thursday night.
With the victory, the Maple Leafs padded their lead in the Atlantic Division standings with a 24-13-2 record, while the Islanders continued to struggle with a 14-18-7 record.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes of play; the Leafs outshot the Islanders 11-8.
But midway through the second period, the ice was broken by Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann, his 11th goal of the season. He beat goaltender Ilya Sorokin with a wrist shot, giving the Leafs the 1-0 lead.
But late in the second period, Scott Mayfield knotted up the score at 1-1 with his second goal of the season.
A costly penalty by the Islanders late in regulation proved to the the difference and set the stage for Bobby McMann to score his second of the night and 12th of the season; it would stand up as the game-winning goal.
Ilya Sorokin was pulled for the extra attacker by head coach Patrick Roy but to no avail. The Russian goaltender made 29 saves, while Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll made 31 saves in a winning effort.

3 most impressive Toronto Maple Leafs players from 2-1 win over New York Islanders
#1. Bobby McMann
The Leafs are getting depth scoring in the absence of captain and reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews, and it was Bobby McMann's night to play the role of hero.
His clutch goal late in regulation stood up as the game-winner and propelled the Leafs to a valuable pair of points.
#2. Joseph Woll
The Leafs goaltender is picking up the bulk of the starts in the absence of Anthony Stolarz, who was placed on Injured Reserve late last month.
And other than Mayfield's goal, he stopped everything that the Islanders threw his way, including seven shots from Bo Horvat, four shots from Matthew Barzal, and four shots from Adam Pelech.
In his last two starts, Woll is a perfect 2-0 with an impressive 1.50 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.
#3. Max Domi
Having struggled offensively for most of the year, Max Domi picked up a key assist on McMann's third-period game-winning goal and had a noticeable jump throughout the game.
The assist was his 11th of the season; he now has 14 points to his tally.
