The Vancouver Canucks became one of the few teams in NHL history to lose when leading by three goals with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as they were beaten by the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on December 28.
On Thursday, the two teams met again; this time at Climate Pledge Arena in downtown Seattle. By the time it was all said and done, the Canucks exacted some revenge on the Kraken with a 4-3 win via the shootout.
The Kraken opened the scoring just 1:52 after the opening faceoff thanks to Chandler Stephenson's fourth goal of the season, giving Seattle the 1-0 lead. However, the Canucks knotted the score at 1-1 with the second goal at 13:17.
Just before the midway point of the second period, the Canucks re-took the lead with Conor Garland's 10th goal; they added another goal to their lead after defenseman Tyler Myers notched his second goal at the 5:35 mark of the third period.
However, the Kraken fought their way back into the game. Matty Beniers tallied on the power play just before the midway point of the third period, followed by the tying goal with 53 seconds left in regulation from Vince Dunn.
Neither team scored in overtime, setting up a shootout. Canucks forward J.T. Miller was the only player who scored, securing the extra point for Vancouver.
3 most impressive Vancouver Canucks players from 4-3 S/O win over Seattle Kraken
#1. Conor Garland
Garland notched his 10th goal of the season in the second period after taking a breakaway pass from teammate Phillip Di Giuseppe and beat goaltender Philipp Grubauer with a nifty backhand-forehand deke:
#2. J.T. Miller
The veteran Canucks forward not only scored the winning goal in the shootout, but he also picked up an assist on Myer's third-period goal; he also blocked a pair of shots from the Kraken.
Miller has been the subject of heavy rumors of a potential trade out of Vancouver due to an alleged conflict with teammate Elias Pettersson.
#3. Kevin Lankinen
The Canucks goaltender was suddenly thrust into action with the injury to starter Thatcher Demko, and he responded by making 13 saves on the 15 shots that he faced.
He came into a difficult situation but made the most of it and earned his 14th win of the season.
