The Vancouver Canucks entered Monday's game against the St. Louis Blues with a 2-3 record in their last five games and hoping to build off their recent victory over the Washington Capitals.
Meanwhile, the Blues entered with a 2-3 record in their last five. But ultimately, it was the Canucks who came out on top with a valuable win, beating the Blues by a 5-2 final score to improve to 22-17-10; the Blues fell to 23-24-4.
The scoring was started by Canucks forward Connor Garland, who scored both Vancouver goals in the first period; they were his 12th and 13th of the season, respectively. The Canucks took their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Canucks then stretched their lead to 3-0 in the second period thanks to a power-play goal from J.T. Miller, his ninth goal of the season. While the Blues responded at the midway point of the period thanks to Dylan Holloway's goal, the Canucks restored the two-goal lead after Pius Suter notched his 12th goal, scored shorthanded.
While the Blues inched closer after Colton Parayko scored, the Canucks iced the game away thanks to the third goal of the year from Tyler Myers.
Kevin Lankinen made 24 saves in net for the Canucks as part of the win, while goaltender Jordan Binnington was chased in the second period in favor of Joel Hofer.
3 most impressive Vancouver Canucks players from 5-2 win over St. Louis Blues
#1. Conor Garland
Garland was at the center of attention for having held down Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, resulting in the latter cross-checking the former in the face over a week ago and resulting in a three-game suspension.
Garland had one of his best performances of the season against the Blues, scoring twice and making his presence known in a major way.
#2. Kevin Lankinen
The Canucks goaltender, who emerged as an unsung hero for Vancouver during Thatcher Demko's absence, has battled inconsistency in recent weeks.
However, his start against the Blues on Monday was a return to the early season form that he enjoyed. He made several key saves against the Blues, including three of four chances from Parayko as well as three saves on Mathieu Joseph.
#3. Pius Suter
The useful Canucks forward, who is hoping to earn himself a new contract for next season, scored a goal while adding an assist and finished the contest with a +3 rating.
Suter can play in any situation that he's put into, and he made the most of his talents on Monday against the Blues.
