The Edmonton Oilers hosted the Nashville Predators on Thursday night in a battle of two teams that started the current 2024-25 season very slowly.

While the Oilers have mostly battled their way back to their usual selves, the Predators continue to seek consistency while trying to climb out of the Central Division standings.

It would be the Predators who found the back of the net first, courtesy of the second goal of the year from Michael McCarron.

But it wouldn't be long before NHL history was made early in the second period, as star captain Connor McDavid scored his sixth goal of the season to give him his 1,000th career point at just 27 years of age.

With well over a decade of high-level hockey still ahead of him in his career, McDavid now has more points than retired forwards like Shane Doan, Paul Kariya, Henrik Zetterberg and Phil Kessel.

Defenseman Darnell Nurse joined the fun, scoring his first goal of the season soon afterward to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead.

Nashville managed to tie the score with time becoming a factor for them, as Cole Smith scored at 17:12. Both teams earned a point in the standings at the end of regulation, with eyes on securing the second point in overtime.

But McDavid already has his sights set on reaching 2,000 career points, as he picked up No. 1,001 by assisting on Nurse's second goal of the night, the overtime winner, with a ridiculous no-look backhand pass:

Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 31 saves in a losing effort, while Edmonton's Calvin Pickard stopped 21 shots.

The win also improved Edmonton's record to 9-7-1, while the Predators fell to 5-9-3.

3 key takeaways from Edmonton Oilers' 3-2 OT win over Nashville Predators

#3. Power play continues to struggle

The good news for the Oilers is that they earned the victory and both points in the standings. The bad news is that their power play continues to demonstrate why it's ranked at the bottom of the NHL.

They failed to convert on all four chances they had with a Predators player in the penalty box, an issue they absolutely must correct.

#2. Darnell Nurse's confidence will grow after his first two goals

Nurse has faced criticism in recent years for his level of play compared to his hefty contract, and he had yet to find the back of the net this season.

However, he scored not once but twice against the Predators, including the overtime winner. As their top defenseman, the Oilers will only benefit from Nurse playing with confidence.

#1. Connor McDavid makes it look easy to make hockey history

McDavid is already a bonafide future Hall of Fame player, and there's still plenty of time for him to win championships.

But the incredible ease with which McDavid makes chasing history appear will be the stuff of legend for years to come. A perfect example was his exemplary assist on Nurse's overtime winner, a move that most players likely wouldn't even attempt in practice.

McDavid has already carved his place in hockey history despite not having even reached 30 years of age yet, and he's only just getting started.
