The Boston Bruins entered Tuesday night's game against the visiting defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers having won a single game in their last six outings, and were desperate for a pair of points in the standings.

Meanwhile, the Oilers arrived at Boston's TD Garden having won three straight games and looking to make it an even four.

They accomplished just that in deciding fashion, shutting out the Bruins by a 4-0 final score and sending Boston to its sixth setback in seven games; Edmonton is now 25-12-3, while the Bruins fell to 20-18-5.

Veteran Adam Henrique, who was acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline last season by the Oilers, began the scoring with his fourth goal.

The Oilers got a scare during the opening 20 minutes as Stuart Skinner left the game after he was shaken up in a collision with Boston's Nikita Zadorov; he was briefly replaced by Calvin Pickard before returning to the crease.

Just past the midway point of the second period, superstar captain Connor McDavid notched his 16th goal while the Oilers enjoyed the man advantage. Henrique soon scored his second of the night, increasing Edmonton's lead to 3-0.

The scoring was capped by Viktor Arvidsson, as he tallied his fifth goal by hitting the vacated net with Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman on the bench for an extra attacker.

Frustrated Bruins fans at TD Garden chanted "Fire Sweeney" in reference to Boston's general manager as time ticked away in the third period.

3 least impressive Boston Bruins players from 4-0 loss to Edmonton Oilers

#1. Mason Lohrei

The Bruins defenseman had a particularly rough outing against the Oilers, finding himself out of position on three of Edmonton's goals and finishing with a poignant -3 rating.

The fact that he finished with the second-least ice time among all Bruins defensemen yet racked up the worst +/- rating isn't helping his case.

#2. Brad Marchand

In the midst of a five-game losing skid, teams often turn toward their leadership group not only for emotional support but for production on the ice.

Right now, Marchand is having a hard time doing both. Not only did he fail to generate any offense for his team, but he looked every bit as listless as the rest of his teammates during this losing streak.

#3. Pavel Zacha

Zacha blew a golden opportunity to score at the side of the net, which directly set up Connor McDavid's breakaway goal to increase Edmonton's lead to 2-0.

Like the rest of his teammates, Zacha produced nothing offensively.

The Bruins will look to bounce back after a day's rest when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning next at Amalie Arena on Thursday.
