The Boston Bruins entered Thursday night's contest against the Tampa Bay Lightning in dire need of a victory, having not won since Dec. 28; as since then, they'd dropped five in a row.

Meanwhile, the Lightning had struggled of late themselves, having won a single game in their last five.

But it was Tampa Bay who emerged on Thursday with a convincing 4-1 win to improve their record to 22-15-2; the Bruins fell to 20-19-2.

Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes of play, but that was quickly remedied in the second period.

Tampa Bay struck first while shorthanded thanks to Anthony Cirelli, giving the Bolts the 1-0 lead. They doubled the lead late in the period thanks to Michael Eyssimont, his fourth goal of the season.

While the Bruins managed to halve the lead for the Lightning with Mason Lohrei's second goal just 2:05 into the third period, it's as close as they'd get. With goaltender Jeremy Swayman on the bench for an extra attacker, the Lightning sealed the win with an empty net goal from Brandon Hagel.

They later added insult to injury with a power-play goal from Brayden Point in the final minute of play.

Swayman finished with 27 saves on 30 shots against, while Andrei Vasilevskiy turned in a vintage performance by making 27 saves, including 11 in the third period.

3 least impressive Boston Bruins players from 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay Lightning

#1. Mason Lohrei

Despite scoring the only goal for the Bruins, Lohrei was caught out of position on Tampa Bay's opening goal. He lumbered down the ice to try and catch Brandon Hagel, who had his shot stopped by Swayman.

He also then failed to corral the puck, which landed right on the stick of Cirelli, who blasted a shot past Swayman.

Lohrei finished with a -2 rating.

#2. David Pastrnak

It was a poor attempt by Pastrnak entering the offensive zone, which he let up and turned the puck over, resulting in a rush the other way that directly led to the opening goal of the game.

Even more so, Pastrnak took a Sunday stroll in attempting to get back into the play after his turnover.

#3. Justin Brazeau

Another Bruins forward who had a poor outing defensively, Brazeau finished with a -2 rating while also taking 12 penalty minutes, some of which came in the final seconds of regulation in the on-ice melee between the two clubs.

The Bruins will look to bounce back when they take on the Florida Panthers next at Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday.
