The New York Islanders entered Sunday's game against the Boston Bruins in need of a victory to give them a boost as the calendar turned to 2025.
Meanwhile, the Bruins also entered Sunday's game in need of a victory to break their three-game losing skid, which included a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Original 6 rival, New York Rangers.
The Islanders sent the Bruins to a fourth straight setback, winning 5-4 in overtime at TD Garden in downtown Boston.
Just 3:01 into the game, Cole Koepke scored his seventh goal of the season for the Bruins, giving them the 1-0 lead. But the Islanders scored the next three goals courtesy of Bo Horvat, Ryan Pulock and Anders Lee, giving them a 3-1 lead.
Midway through the second period, Justin Brazeau scored to make it 3-2, only to have Lee respond and restore the two-goal lead for the Islanders. The Bruins fought their way back into the contest after a pair of third-period goals from David Pastrnak, sending the game to overtime.
But the extra point in overtime was secured by New York's Bo Horvat, his second goal of the game. Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves for the Islanders, while Joonas Korpisalo made 32 saves in a losing effort.
3 most disappointing Boston Bruins players from 5-4 OT loss to New York Islanders
#1. Elias Lindholm
The first-year Bruins center had a subpar showing on the stat sheet. Not only did he fail to register a single point, but he was also on the ice for four Islanders goals, giving him a -4 rating.
Lindholm also had a poor defensive outing in Boston's most recent loss, hinting at a deeper issue that needs addressing by the Bruins' coaching staff.
#2. Brad Marchand
Just like his teammate Lindholm, Marchand also had a bad day at the office. He also finished with a -4 rating while registering zero points.
Marchand is in the final year of his current contract, and his performance on Sunday isn't doing him any favors.
#3. Charlie Coyle
Continuing in the theme of poor defensive showings from their forwards, Boston's Charlie Coyle also had a subpar outing with a -2 rating along with zero points on the score sheet.
The Bruins could have used Coyle's abilities to produce points, but it went for naught against the Islanders.
He and the Bruins will attempt to right the ship when they take on the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
