The Calgary Flames were fresh off a victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night in which both teams celebrated the life and legacy of the late Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, both of whom were killed while cycling during the offseason.
The Flames returned to business on Thursday against the visiting St. Louis Blues, who have gotten a boost since firing head coach Drew Bannister and replacing him with former Jack Adams Trophy-winning bench boss Jim Montgomery, who had been fired recently himself by the Boston Bruins.
And Montgomery picked up yet another victory as Blues head coach as St. Louis defeated the Flames by a 4-3 final score in overtime. They've now picked up points in five straight since the coaching change was made.
The Blues got first-period goals from Zack Bolduc and Robert Thomas, while the Flames countered with Jakob Pellitier's first goal.
Matt Coranato tied the game in the second period with a power-play tally, while both teams went back and forth in the third thanks to goals from Pavel Buchnevich followed by MacKenzie Weegar's response.
In overtime, Colton Parayko ended the game with the winning goal, his fifth of the year.
Jordan Binnington made 33 saves in the win for the Blues, while Dan Vladar stopped 20 of 24 shots.
3 least impressive Calgary Flames players from 4-3 OT loss to St. Louis Blues
#3. Yegor Sharangovich
One of the players that the Flames rely upon for offense, Sharangovich wasn't much of a factor for the Flames in their loss against the Blues.
Not only did he fail to register a single shot on net, but he was also a -1.
#2. Martin Pospisil
Another Flames player who wasn't much of a factor for his team during their loss against the Blues was Pospisil, who was on the ice for two Blues goals, had no shots, and also made a trip to the penalty box.
#1. Dan Vladar
The Flames goaltender has mostly had a positive campaign since becoming the de facto starter following the offseason trade of Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils.
However, he allowed a pair of goals to the Blues that he would like back, which forced his team to play catch-up hockey.
The Flames can have every confidence that Vladar will bounce back in his next outing, but Thursday night wasn't his best.
Calgary will look to return to winning ways when they travel to American Airlines Center to take on the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
