The Calgary Flames have impressed critics so far during the 2024-25 NHL season, finding themselves in playoff contention a little over a week into the second half.
They entered Sunday's game against the Winnipeg Jets riding a three-game winning streak, while the Jets had won three of their last four games.
Ultimately, the Jets cooled off the Flames with a 5-2 win at Canada Life Centre in downtown Winnipeg. The Jets improved to 34-14-3, while the Flames fell to 27-17-7.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the first period when Kyle Connor netted his 27th goal of the season at 5:28. Just past the midway point of the second period, Mason Appleton extended the Jets' lead to 2-0 with his seventh goal.
The Flames got back into the contest with a power-play goal from MacKenzie Weegar, but Winnipeg restored its two-goal advantage when Gabriel Vilardi scored the first of his two goals.
Vilardi struck again just 3:07 into the third period, pushing the lead to 4-1. Calgary refused to go quietly as Nazem Kadri scored his 17th goal to make it 4-2, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Mark Scheifele scored on the power play for his 28th goal of the season.
Flames goaltender Dan Vladar struggled, allowing five goals on 27 shots for a .815 save percentage. Jets netminder Eric Comrie stopped 20 shots in a winning effort.
3 least impressive Calgary Flames players from 5-2 loss to Winnipeg Jets
#1. Dan Vladar
It was a rough night for Vladar, who allowed five goals on just 27 shots, finishing with a save percentage of .815.
He would likely want a second chance on at least two of the goals scored by the Jets. With Sunday’s subpar outing, his goals-against average climbed to 3.12 for the season.
#2. Daniil Miromanov
The Calgary Flames defenseman finished with a minus-2 rating, tied for the team's worst against the Jets. He was caught out of position on two Winnipeg goals, not the type of performance needed from a young player trying to establish himself at the NHL level.
#3. Ryan Lomberg
Lomberg was a non-factor for the Flames against the Jets, finishing with zero points, a minus-2 rating and no shot attempts.
While he is not relied upon as a key offensive contributor, the Calgary Flames need more from him than complete zeros on the scoresheet.
