The Chicago Blackhawks dropped a disappointing 4-2 game to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night at the United Center. The Blackhawks scored twice in the third period to pull within one, but the Wild sealed the victory with an empty-net goal late in the third.
Jared Spurgeon, Frederick Gaudreau, Joel Eriksson Ek (power-play goal) and Marcus Foligno (empty-net) scored for the Wild. Meanwhile, Seth Jones (power-play goal) and Frank Nazar scored for the Blackhawks.
Here’s a look at the three least impressive Blackhawks players from the loss to the Minnesota Wild.
3 least impressive Chicago Blackhawks players from loss to Minnesota Wild
#3 Nick Foligno
Chicago Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno failed to make a significant impact on Sunday night. He played just under 13 minutes over 19 shifts, did not register a shot on goal and finished with a minus-1 rating.
While Foligno isn’t expected to be a top scorer at this point in his career, the Blackhawks rely on him for leadership and depth scoring. However, he had a quiet and largely disappointing game as the Hawks couldn’t close the gap on the comeback.
#2 Tyler Bertuzzi
Tyler Bertuzzi is expected to provide the Blackhawks with top-six scoring while adding grit to the lineup. While he registered an assist on Sunday night, Bertuzzi was a minus-2 in over 18 minutes of ice time on 19 shifts. He did not record a shot on goal throughout the game.
Overall, Bertuzzi has underachieved this season, scoring 17 goals in 48 games with a minus-22 rating. The Blackhawks expect more from him, especially given his role in the team’s top six.
#1 Connor Bedard
It’s difficult to place much blame on the Blackhawks’ rising star. Connor Bedard has had a solid season, following up his Rookie of the Year campaign with 42 points in 48 games.
However, Bedard was largely inconsequential on Sunday night. He registered an assist but ended with a minus-2 rating. Despite playing over 22 minutes on 23 shifts, he managed just two shots on goal.
Bedard failed to be the game-changer the Blackhawks hoped he would be. Ultimately, he could not help his teammates close the gap against the Wild, leaving their comeback hopes stranded.
The Chicago Blackhawks will have a chance to regroup on Sunday night before taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Tuesday.
