The Edmonton Oilers entered Saturday night's matchup against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena in downtown Vancouver red-hot, having won four straight games.

Meanwhile, the Canucks were 1-3-1 in their last five games and were in desperate need of a victory. Ultimately, it would be the Canucks who picked up the badly-needed win by jumping out to an early lead and then protecting it late in the game.

The Canucks prevailed by a 3-2 final score and improved their record to 20-15-10, while the Oilers fell to 29-14-3.

The first period was exactly what the Canucks needed, as they seized a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Quinn Hughes, Danton Heinen and then Hughes once again.

For Hughes, his pair of goals was his 11th and 12th of the season, respectively.

However, the Oilers began to fight their way back into the contest. Superstar forward Leon Draisaitl, who is putting together another incredible campaign for Edmonton, scored twice to cut their deficit to a single goal.

The tallies were his 32nd and 33rd goals of the season, respectively.

But try as they would, the Oilers proved unable to get any further. The Canucks were able to deny all attempts by Edmonton to tie the game, picking up a valuable pair of points in the standings.

Stuart Skinner made 24 saves on the 27 shots that he faced from Vancouver, while Thatcher Demko's night was far less busy, making 13 saves on 15 shots.

#1. Connor McDavid

While McDavid did pick up an assist on Draisaitl's second goal, he hurt his team thanks to his ill-advised tantrum in the third period. He got tangled up with Canucks forward Conor Garland and retaliated with a brutal cross check to Garland's face.

McDavid received a match penalty and was thrown from the game, and will be getting a call from the NHL Department of Player Safety as a result. McDavid may have played well up until that point, but his selfish actions weren't in the best interest of the team, and they may very well have to play without him for the next game or two depending on the severity of the punishment.

#2. Zach Hyman

As one of Edmonton's point producers from last season, Hyman hasn't been able to score at the same level as he did in 2023-24, but he has picked up his game of late.

Unfortuantely for the Oilers, he was nowhere to be found on the scoresheet against the Canucks, and only managed a single shot.

#3. Troy Stecher

The only Oilers defenseman to finish with a minus plus/minus rating, he was caught out of position in the first period on Danton Heinen's goal on a play that he'd love a second chance on.

He was also guilty of committing a giveaway in less than nine minutes of play.
