In a matchup of two polar opposite clubs on paper, the squad that would not have been picked by many to come away with a victory did just that.
The Anaheim Ducks, one of the lowest-ranked teams in the Western Conference, defeated the reigning Conference champion Edmonton Oilers in comeback fashion this afternoon at Honda Center by a 5-3 final score. The win improved the Ducks to 14-17-4, while the Oilers fell to 21-12-3.
The loss ended Edmonton's seven-game winning streak over the Ducks, in which they outscored them by a total of 41-11.
The Oilers led 2-0 and 3-1 but couldn't finish the job. The first ten minutes of the opening period went as the Oilers thought it would, as they opened up a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard.
But the Ducks cut the lead in half with Cutter Gauthier's fifth goal; the score at the end of 20 minutes was 2-1 for Edmonton.
The lead for Edmonton was increased to 3-1 after Draisaitl once again scored on the power play, giving him a total of 26 goals so far. But from that point on, it was all Ducks.
Drew Helleson and Robby Fabbri knotted the score at 3-3, setting the stage for a late third-period goal from Ryan Strome to give the Ducks their first lead; the win was sealed when Mason MacTavish scored into the vacated Edmonton net with goaltender Calvin Pickard pulled for the extra attacker.
Pickard finished with 27 saves on the 31 shots he faced, while Lukas Dostal made 20 saves.
3 least impressive Edmonton Oilers players from 5-3 loss to Anaheim Ducks feat. Calvin Pickard
#1. Calvin Pickard
While the Oilers goaltender wasn't their main source of issues in their loss against the Ducks, there were at least a pair of stoppable shots that made their way past him on Sunday.
Edmonton decided to run it back with the combination of Stuart Skinner and Pickard between the pipes; their combined salary cap hit is less than $4 million. While the Oilers have plenty of firepower up front, their goaltending remains their top issue.
#2. Darnell Nurse
Not only did Nurse finish the game with a -2 rating, but he also inadvertently redirected the puck past Pickard, giving the Ducks their second goal of the night and setting the stage for their comeback.
#3. Derek Ryan
The bottom-six forward who replaced the scratched Jeff Skinner in the lineup, he didn't make his presence felt in any kind of meaningful way for the Oilers.
He also finished with a -2 rating. Right now, whether or not Skinner returns to the lineup remains to be seen, but Ryan didn't do himself any favors with his performance against the Ducks.
