The Montreal Canadiens returned home on Saturday night for a matchup against the New Jersey Devils at Bell Centre in downtown Montreal, one of the best teams in the NHL this season.
The Habs were 2-2 in their last four outings coming into Saturday's game, while the Devils were 1-2-1. Ultimately, it would be the Devils seizing a win over the Habs in overtime, a 4-3 final score that improved their record to 28-17-6; the Habs dropped to 24-20-5.
The game started in the Devils' favor, as they took a 2-0 lead after goals from captain Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt; their 24th and 16th goals of the season, respectively. New Jersey took the 2-0 lead into the dressing room for the first intermission.
Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki halved New Jersey's lead just 3:50 into the second period by scoring his 15th goal, only to have the two-goal lead restored by New Jersey's Tomas Tatar, scoring against his former team.
Not to be outdone, Montreal's Cole Caufield once again cut the lead to a single goal by scoring his 24th goal of the season.
Early in the third period, Alexandre Carrier once again knotted the game, scoring his second goal. Neither team was able to grab the go-ahead goal in regulation, setting up overtime.
And unfortunately for Montreal, it was Jack Hughes who took advantage of his opportunity on a breakaway late in the extra session.
Rookie Jakub Dobes lost for the first time in his young NHL career with the Habs, making 40 saves. Meanwhile, former Canadiens goalie Jake Allen made 29 saves.
3 least impressive Montreal Canadiens players from 4-3 OT loss to New Jersey Devils
#1. Jake Evans
It was not a good night overall for the usually reliable Jake Evans in the overtime loss to the Devils. He finished tied for a team-worst -3 rating while also committing a costly turnover.
He also failed to beat former teammate Jake Allen for what would have been the game-winning goal in the final seconds of regulation.
#2. Joel Armia
Like Evans, it wasn't a good night defensively for Armia, who has been one of the key peformers for Montreal during their recent winning ways in the last several weeks.
He finished with a -2 rating and also was guilty of a turnover.
#3. Patrik Laine
Enjoying a career resurgance with the Canadiens, Laine wasn't much of a factor for the Habs against the Devils. He finished with zero points, a -2 rating and a pair of giveaways.
Laine has been one of the better acquisitions in the NHL for this season, but it wasn't his night on Saturday against the Devils.
