There is something seriously running amok with the New York Rangers, who started the 2024-25 NHL regular season strong but have since completely stumbled far off from where they figured they'd be at this point in the NHL campaign.
Saturday afternoon, they brought in the Los Angeles Kings for a matinee affair at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. But rather than a Hollywood ending for the Rangers, Los Angeles instead dealt them the latest sequel in a series of shocking horror movies.
The Kings defeated the New York Rangers 5-1, giving them their ninth loss in their last 12 games, something that seemed unthinkable when they began the campaign with a 12-4-1 record.
Alex Turcotte and Warren Foegele tallied in the opening 20 minutes for the Kings, who took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Los Angeles then pushed down harder on the Rangers, scoring three goals in just 2:18 courtesy of Quinton Byfield, Adrian Kempe and Phillip Danault.
Filip Chytil cut into the Kings lead with his sixth goal of the season, but it was the lone highlight of the afternoon for the Rangers.
Darcy Kuemper made 31 saves in a winning effort for the Kings, while his counterpart Igor Shesterkin was pulled by coach Peter Laviolette after allowing five goals on just 21 shots.
Who were the three least impressive New York Rangers players from Saturday's loss to the Kings?
3 least impressive New York Rangers from 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings feat. Igor Shesterkin
#1. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin
For a player who signed the richest goaltending contract in NHL history on Dec. 8, Shesterkin sure didn't play like it on Saturday against the Kings.
While the New York Rangers defense did him no favors, the performance by Shesterkin is one that he'll want to forget in a hurry.
He never removed his mask once he sat on the bench.
#2. Zac Jones
One particularly brutal performance by a Rangers defenseman was that of Zac Jones, who finished the game with a -3 rating in 17:36 minutes as part of the second-period barrage of offense by the Kings that they couldn't counter.
#3. Victor Mancini
Another Rangers defenseman who couldn't get out of his own way (and into the Kings' way) was Victor Mancini, who also finished with a -3 rating in 14:56 minutes.
New York was clearly missing K'Andre Miller, who was placed on Injured Reserve on Friday - and those who remained in the lineup didn't help to compensate for his absence.
