The New York Rangers faced their Original Six rival Chicago Blackhawks at Madison Square Garden on Monday. The Hawks had just made a major change themselves with the termination of Luke Richardson as head coach; Anders Sorensen took over on an interim basis.
And he picked up his first victory as an NHL head coach in the World's Most Famous Arena thanks to the Blackhawks edging the Rangers by a 2-1 final score.
It's a broken record for the New York Rangers that just won't stop playing, and if they can't get it together quickly, there could be some major changes on the horizon.
The loss dropped the New York Rangers to 14-12-1 (and 2-8 in their last 10 games), while the Blackhawks picked up their first win in five attempts and improved to 9-17-2.
The Blackhawks found the back of the net first thanks to first-year Blackhawks forward Tyler Bertuzzi's sixth goal of the season. New York countered with Will Cuylle's shorthanded tally, knotting the score at 1-1 late in the first period.
But at 6:18 of the second period, the Blackhawks secured the game-winning goal courtesy of Taylor Hall; like Bertuzzi, it was his sixth goal.
Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who was recently signed to the richest goaltending contract in NHL history, made 30 saves in a losing effort. Meanwhile, Arvid Soderblom finished with 29 saves.
3 least impressive New York Rangers players during 2-1 loss to Chicago Blackhawks feat.
#1. Mika Zibanejad
New York Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad faced considerable criticism for his poor performance earlier in the season during a game against the Winnipeg Jets, in which he committed three turnovers that resulted directly in goals for the opposition.
Against the Blackhawks on Monday, it was more of the same. A badly-timed giveaway as he tried to take the puck behind his own net resulted in Hall finding an open Bertuzzi at the side of the net:
#2. K'Andre Miller
Keeping with the theme of disastrous giveaways, K'Andre Miller misplayed the puck during the second period and it resulted directly in a 2-on-1 rush between Hall and Connor Bedard that resulted in Hall's goal
It was one of several giveaways committed by Miller over the course of the game, one that he'll want to put in the rear-view mirror as quickly as possible.
#3. Braden Schneider
Miller's defensive partner didn't have any egregious giveaways, but he and Miller were on the ice together for a total of six high-percentage scoring chances for the Blackhawks.
