The Philadelphia Flyers dropped a tough 3-1 decision to the New York Islanders on Friday night at UBS Arena. The Flyers opened the scoring in the first period but were unable to get much going beyond that. Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves to keep the Flyers in check.
Tyson Foerster got the tally for the Philadelphia Flyers, while Anthony Duclair, Bo Horvat and Brock Nelson scored for the New York Islanders.
So, let’s take a look at the three least impressive Philadelphia Flyers players from their loss to the New York Islanders:
Three least impressive Philadelphia Flyers from loss to New York Islanders
#3 Ivan Fedotov
The Philadelphia Flyers starting netminder Ivan Fedotov had a bit of a rough night.
He gave up three goals on 27 shots, including a weak goal by Brock Nelson. In the play, Nelson streaked down the right side, faking a slapshot and then beating Fedotov with a wrister.
Here’s a look at Nelson's goal:
The shot fooled Fedotov, beating him on the short side. In the replay, Fedotov’s frustration is clearly evident as he knew he should have had the goal. Instead, Nelson tricked him into believing he would make a stronger shot.
The goal was the insurance marker the Islanders needed to take home the two points.
#2 Sean Couturier
The Philadelphia Flyers captain had a quiet night. Couturier didn't register on the scoresheet in over 17 minutes of ice time. He managed just two shots on 21 shifts. Most importantly, he didn't contribute significantly to the Flyers’ performance.
The blanking snapped Couturier’s three-game point streak. The Flyers expect their captain to play a more significant role as they look to make noise in the Metro Division.
#1 Travis Sanheim
The Flyers’ top defenseman Travis Sanheim had a tough game. He ended the night a minus-3 in over 24 minutes of ice time. He skated in 33 shifts, failing to get much going offensively or defensively. He registered two shots on goal and blocked none.
The performance was a disappointing one for Sanheim, as he was unable to be a difference-maker. Far from it, Sanheim was on the ice for all three Islanders goals. A good example of his lack of impact came on the Nelson goal.
Sanheim was late in getting back into the play. When he caught up to Nelson, Sanheim tried to stick-check the puck away to no avail. Nelson scored, leaving Sanheim looking slow and out of place.
Sanheim and the Flyers will have a chance to regroup over the weekend before taking on the New Jersey Devils in a Metro Division showdown on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
