Hockey fans are always in for a treat when rivals Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs renew acquaintances. And while Saturday night games are typically played at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena, this game took place in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa at Canadian Tire Centre.
The Leafs entered the contest with a 3-1 record in their last four games, while the Senators entered with a 2-2 record in their last four.
The Senators came out on top, earning a 2-1 victory and improving to 25-20-4. The Leafs fell to 30-18-2.
The Maple Leafs found the back of the net first, as Bobby McMann scored his 14th goal of the season just 3:46 after the opening faceoff. But just past the midway point of the first period, Ottawa knotted the score thanks to a power-play conversion from Tim Stutzle, his 16th goal of the season.
At the midway point of the third period, Ottawa took the lead for good thanks to a deflection goal from Shane Pinto that made its way past goaltender Joseph Woll.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were unable to draw even. Woll finished with 21 saves in a losing effort, while Anton Forsberg made 28 saves for Ottawa.
Toronto Maple Leafs players from Ottawa Senators
#1. Auston Matthews
These are the kinds of games that the Toronto Maple Leafs need their captain and the reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner to come up big in.
Unfortunately, Matthews was a complete nonfactor for his team tonight. He finished with zero points and managed only a single shot on goal, not at all the kind of performance that's indicative of his talent level.
#2. Philippe Myers
The young Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman missed a key assignment on Shane Pinto's game-winning goal, arriving at the play far too late as the puck was already in the back of the net.
He was one of only two Leafs defensemen to finish with a negative plus-minus rating, bringing his total on the season to a pedestrian minus-7 rating.
#3. Mitch Marner
Another player that the Leafs need to come through in tightly contested divisional matchups, Marner was a nonfactor offensively with no points and, like Matthews, only a single shot.
He also blew a defensive assignment of his own on Pinto's goal, allowing him to walk right in across the goal line and get a shot off, which deflected past Woll and into the net.
