The Toronto Maple Leafs entered Saturday night's game at Scotiabank Arena with a 3-0 loss to the visiting Vancouver Canucks. The Leafs were coming off a 6-3 loss on Thursday night to the Carolina Hurricanes where Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews finished with abysmal -6 ratings.

Meanwhile, the Canucks were coming off a 1-2-2 record in their last five games. They picked up a much-needed victory by shutting out the Toronto Maple Leafs to improve to 19-13-10 on the season, while the Leafs fell to 27-15-2 with their second consecutive loss.

After allowing six goals against the Hurricanes on Thursday, the Leafs surrendered a goal just 31 seconds after the opening faceoff in the first period, thanks to Brock Boeser, as Vancouver took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

There was no further scoring until late in the second period. Canucks captain and reigning Norris Trophy winning defenseman Quinn Hughes scored on the power-play to make it 2-0. Once again, the Leafs would allow another early goal to begin a period, as Kiefer Sherwood scored just 47 seconds into the final frame.

Kevin Lankinen earned the shutout, the seventh of his NHL career, by stopping all 20 shots the Leafs managed, while Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby finished with 15 saves on 18 shots.

Three least impressive Toronto Maple Leafs players in 3-0 loss to Vancouver Canucks

#1 Auston Matthews

Matthews had been wanting to correct his career-worst -6 rating from Thurdsay's loss to the Carolina Hurricanes by turning in a strong performance against the Canucks on home ice.

It didn't happen, though. Not only did the Toronto Maple Leafs player fail to provide any offensive punch, but he finished with a -1 rating while getting just two shots.

#2 Max Pacioretty

Pacioretty, who was a healthy scratch for Thursday's loss against the Hurricanes, didn't quite make his case to get more ice time. Not only did he register zero points and zero shots, he also had a poor plus-minus rating, finishing -2 in the loss to the Canucks.

He's on a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has been utilized mostly in a bottom-six role. But he bore little resemblence to the player who was once a top-line forward with the Montreal Canadiens and the Vegas Golden Knights.

#3 Dennis Hildeby

Appearing between the pipes after Joseph Woll allowed six goals to Carolina, Hildeby didn't have the best game of his young NHL career. He allowed three goals on just 18 shots against, a final save percentage of .889 on the night.
