The Toronto Maple Leafs entered Tuesday night's game at home against the Dallas Stars in need of a win to snap their two-game losing skid.

Meanwhile, the Stars entered the contest having won three of their last four games. Ultimately, it was the Stars who made it four wins in their last five, beating the Maple Leafs by a 4-1 final score at Scotiabank Arena.

The win improved Dallas to 28-14-1, while the Leafs dropped to 27-16-2; they've now lost three consecutive games in regulation for the first time this season.

The game started well enough for the Leafs, who got on the scoreboard first thanks to captain Auston Matthews' 15th goal of the season just over four minutes after the opening face-off.

But the Stars would knot the score thanks to Logan Stankoven's fifth goal of the season; it was also his first goal in 25 games. Both teams entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.

The Stars took control from that point on, getting goals from Mavrik Bourque, Matt Duchene and the second of the night from Stankoven; the latter two goals were scored early in the 3rd period and just under two minutes apart.

Jake Oettinger made 27 saves in a winning effort for the Stars, while Joseph Woll's night wasn't as sharp; he was victimized four times on 23 shots.

#1. Joseph Woll

The Leafs' goaltender didn't have an overly busy night, facing only 23 shots against. However, despite not getting much help from the defense in front of him, he failed to make the saves that he needed to and finished the game with a .826 save percentage.

The Leafs will need much more out of Woll in terms of performance moving forward if they're to have any realistic chance of going on a deep postseason run.

#2. John Tavares

1/4 of the Maple Leafs "Core 4" of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner and himself, Tavares was nowhere to be found on the scoresheet for the Leafs despite enjoying a bounce-back season in terms of offense.

Not only did he not produce anything on the offensive side of the puck, but he also took two separate trips to the penalty box, one of which the Stars converted.

#3. Morgan Rielly

Toronto's leading defenseman didn't have his best outing against the Stars, finishing with a -1 rating while also committing a pair of giveaways.

Against a top offensive team like the Stars, the Maple Leafs needed tight defensive play, and they didn't get enough of it on Monday.

The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back when they host the New Jersey Devils next at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday.
