Hoping to maintain their top spot in the Western Conference, the Winnipeg Jets hosted the Utah Hockey Club at Canadian Life Centre in downtown Winnipeg for a Friday night matchup.
The Jets aimed to exact revenge on the Utah Hockey Club for the 5-2 beating they delivered on Monday at Salt Lake City's Delta Center. They did just that, earning a decisive 5-2 triumph and improving their record to 33-14-3, while Utah fell to 21-20-7.
The scoring opened late in the first period by Winnipeg's Cole Perfetti, who scored a power-play goal to put the Jets on the scoresheet first; it was his eighth goal of the season and the first of three on the night.
Early in the second period, the Utah Hockey Club knotted the score thanks to a power-play goal of their own from Nick Schmaltz. But just before the midway point of the period, Winnipeg's David Gustafsson scored his first goal of the season, restoring the lead.
While Utah's Barrett Hayton tied things up once again early in the third period, Perfetti soon scored his second of the game for the Jets.
After Niolaj Ehlers made the score 4-2 with his 15th goal of the season, Perfetti would soon complete the hat trick by scoring into the empty net with 1:45 remaining.
Connor Ingram made 24 saves for Utah in a losing effort, while Connor Hellebuyck stopped 17 of 19 shots he faced.
3 least impressive Utah Hockey Club players from 5-2 loss to Winnipeg Jets
#1. Ian Cole
First year Utah defenseman Ian Cole has brought valuable veteran leadership to the group, but Friday night's performance is one that he'll want to forget.
He tied for a team-worst -3 rating during the loss to the Jets, and also committed a pair of costly giveaways.
#2. Alex Kerfoot
Another Jets player who finished with a regrettable plus-minus rating during the loss to the Jets. Kerfoot also committed three separate giveaways for Utah while also registering zero points and one lone shot.
#3. Connor Ingram
While Ingram has mostly played steady between the pipes for Utah this season, his outing on Friday was porous. At least a pair of Jets goals he would love a second opportunity on, and the four goals he allowed won't do anything to help his goals-against average, which has now risen above 3.00 in 16 games.
