The Vancouver Canucks lost 2-1 in overtime to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday. The Canucks have one victory in their last five games, while the Capitals have won their last five.
While both teams earned points on Wednesday, Washington gained the extra point up for grabs, after 60 minutes weren't enough to decide a winner. Pierre-Luc Dubois netted the game-winner in the extra session to improve Washington's impressive record to 27-10-4, while the Canucks dropped to 18-12-10.
Dubois, who ended the game in overtime, ironically began the scoring in the first period with his sixth goal of the season. He's in his first season with the Capitals after being acquired over the offseason in the trade that sent goaltender Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings.
Neither team found the back of the net until late in the second period when Vancouver's Conor Garland netted his 11th of the season. He scored on the power play with 37 seconds left in the game's middle frame.
Both teams would remain scoreless through the third period, setting up overtime. It gave Dubois the chance to play the role of hero, ending the game with his second goal of the night with 41 seconds remaining.
Goaltender Kevin Lankinen made 16 saves in a losing effort for the Vancouver Canucks, while Logan Thompson was impressive with 30 saves on 31 shots.
Three least impressive Vancouver Canucks players in 2-1 OT loss to Washington Capitals
#1 Tyler Myers
Not only did Myers finish the game with a team-worst -2 rating, he was also was guilty of the biggest defensive blunder of the game in overtime on the winning goal.
Myers pursued Aliaksei Protas, who cut behind the net and sent a pass to the wide open Dubois. The only problem was that Myers was too far gone into the corner. While he furiously skated back toward his own net, he delivered a slash to Dubois that made no difference.
#2 Jake DeBrusk
Like Myers, DeBrusk was also caught completely flat-footed and out of position on the winning goal from Dubois in overtime.
Both players were guilty of lapses in judgement, failing to recognize that Dubois was wide open coming down the wing, which spelled doom for the Canucks.
#3 Quinn Hughes
Vancouver Canucks captain and best defenseman had an uncharacteristically poor defensive outing against the Capitals, committing three turnovers.
