The Vancouver Canucks returned to home ice for the first time since the calendar turned to 2025, hosting the struggling Nashville Predators in a rematch of their opening round Stanley Cup Playoffs series from the Spring of 2024.
While the Canucks have their sights set on a second straight Pacific Division championship, the Predators are fighting and clawing just to try and get back into the thick of the Western Conference playoff chance after a stunningly abysmal beginning to the season they entered viewed by many as legitimate title contenders.
Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes of play; both the Predators and Canucks returned to their respective dressing rooms scoreless.
And while it appeared as though both teams were trending toward doing the same after the game's middle frame, it was the visiting Predators who struck first.
The ice was finally broken by former Tampa Bay Lightning Steven Stamkos, who scored his 12th goal of the season late in the second period.
The Canucks weren't able to penetrate the Predators defense and goaltending of Juuse Saros, who would ultimately pick up his fourth shutout of the season. The Predators earned a 3-0 win, capped by empty net goals from Gustav Nyquist and Colton Sissons.
Saros finished with 27 saves, while former Predators goaltender Kevin Lankinen finished with 16 saves on the 17 shots he faced.
3 least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from 3-0 loss to Nashville Predators
#1. Brock Boeser
The Canucks need their other high-profile players to step up in the absence of captain Quinn Hughes and forward Elias Pettersson, and naturally, Brock Boeser's name would be at the top of the list.
However, he generated nothing in terms of offense and didn't even register a single shot on net while finishing with a -2 rating.
#2. Pius Suter
One of Vancouver's reliable forwards, Suter also failed to generate anything offensively while, like Boeser, finishing with a -2 rating.
He's in a contract season, and performances like he had Friday night aren't what he can use in hopes of landing a new, more lucrative deal.
#3. Dakota Joshua
While he didn't have the worst game of his career, Joshua's critical error cost the Canucks a goal. He shoved Nashville's Nick Blankenberg into Saros right as teammate Teddy Blueger was taking a shot; the play was challenged for goaltender interference and proved to be a successful challenge.
The goal was taken off the board; it would have given the Canucks a 1-0 lead.
The Canucks will look to bounce back when they face the Montreal Canadiens at Centre Bell on Monday.
