The Vancouver Canucks came into Monday night's game against the Montreal Canadiens needing to shake off the bad feeling of a disappointing 3-0 loss to the Nashville Predators Saturday night, who are the next-to-last ranked club in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, the Canadiens entered the game having won seven of their last nine games. And when the dust settled, the Habs picked up their eighth win in their last 10 games.
Canadian captain Nick Suzuki potted the game-winning goal in overtime on the power-play, a goal that needed to withstand a video review.
The Canucks raced out to a 3-1 lead after initially falling behind 1-0, getting a pair of goals from J.T. Miller (breaking a 12-game drought) and Jonathan Lekkerimaki.
But the Habs fought their way back into the lead in the third period; Jake DeBrusk tied the score, but a costly penalty in overtime resulted in Suzuki's game-winner.
“If we could have got out of that [second] period 3-1, it would have settled some guys down, but we gave them that [screened] goal and it gave them a little bit of life,” head coach Rick Tocchet said. “It’s confidence. There are times when you need a guy to make a play.
“When teams put pressure on us, we’re just slapping pucks around. We need more guys to participate by meeting pressure with pressure. You should want the puck. Sometimes, you need contact to get pucks out and we’re a little shy in that area," he added.
Who were the least impressive Canucks performers from their second straight loss?
3 least impressive Vancouver Canucks players from 5-4 OT loss to Montreal Canadiens
#1. Kevin Lankinen
While Lankinen has been one of the most valuable players for the Canucks this season and has helped as much as anyone to keep the team afloat in the absence of Thatcher Demko, Monday night was not one of his finer performances with Vancouver.
He allowed five goals on just 24 shots against, a porous save percentage of .792.
#2. Max Sasson
In an example of being careless with the puck, not only did Sasson finish with a -1 rating but he was also guilty of four separate giveaways, one of which resulted in a goal against.
#3. Conor Garland
One of Vancouver's more unsung players this season, Garland didn't get anything going offensively for his club, which was starved for offense, especially after being shut out on Saturday night.
He finished with zero points along with a -1 rating.
The Canucks return to the ice when they take on the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Wednesday.
