The Washington Capitals entered their Friday night contest against the visiting Montreal Canadiens having gone 3-0-3 in their last six games and coming on the heels of a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the Habs looked to keep their hot streak alive, having won two straight games and eight of their last 10 overall.

When the dust settled, it was the Habs who picked up their ninth win in their last 11 games thanks to a 3-2 overtime victory at Capital One Arena. They improved to 20-18-3, while the Capitals fell to 27-10-5.

Washington gained the advantage in the first period with Jakob Chychrun's 12th goal of the season; the Capitals enjoyed a power play at the time of his goal. But the Canadiens would take the lead in the second period thanks to Cole Caufield's 23rd goal of the season, followed by a shorthanded tally from Josh Anderson.

The Capitals then responded early in the third period, as the recently reacquired Lars Eller knotted the score with his eighth goal. He was brought back for his second tour of duty with Washington in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the season.

However, the Capitals couldn't quite complete the comeback. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki scored the game-winning tally in overtime, meaning Washington would have to settle for a lone point in the standings.

3 least impressive Washington Capitals players from 3-2 overtime loss to Montreal Canadiens

#1. Pierre Luc-Dubois

Dubois was the hero for the Capitals on Wednesday night, scoring the overtime-winning goal in their win over the Vancouver Canucks.

However, he was nowhere to be found on the scoresheet on Friday night, registering zero points and failing to generate anything offensively. He also finished with zero shots along with a -2 rating.

#2. Rasmus Sandin

Another Capitals player who finished with a -2 rating, Sandin was caught out of position on both Canadiens goals he was on the ice for, including Anderson's shorthanded goal.

The negative in the plus-minus for Sandin was especially unusual considering he entered the game with a +14 rating.

#3. Connor McMichael

One of the best young surprises for the Capitals this season, McMichael (like Dubois) generated nothing offensively for his club against the Canadiens.

He also finished with zero shots and a -2 rating, something that he'll want to clean up for Washington's next game on Saturday night against the Nashville Predators.
