The Chicago Blackhawks returned to winning ways against the basement-dwelling San Jose Sharks on Thursday at United Center, beating them by a 4-2 final score in the home opener.
The win improved Chicago's record to 2-2-1 through the first five games of the season, while the Sharks remained winless and dropped to 0-2-2.
Veteran forward Taylor Hall, who missed most of last season, started the scoring for the Blackhawks early in the first period by beating goaltender Vitek Vanecek with a shot from just inside the right faceoff circle.
Chicago's lead increased to 2-0 after Tyler Bertuzzi's first goal as a Blackhawk, deflecting home a pass in the slot from Teuvo Teravainen.
Captain Nick Foligno would strike on the power play in the second period, increasing Chicago's lead to three.
The Sharks got on the board after Tyler Toffoli's third goal of the season late in the game's middle frame, while Jason Dickinson restored the three-goal lead for the Blackhawks early in the third period.
While the Sharks forward Fabian Zetterlund scored seconds later, it would be as close as they'd get. Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek made 20 saves on 22 shots, while Vanecek stopped 23 of 27 shots.
What were the three biggest takeaways from Chicago's win over San Jose?
#3. Tyler Bertuzzi found the back of the net
The scrappy forward was one of several free-agent additions made by the Blackhawks over the summer, signing a four-year contract having played the last two years on one-year deals.
Not only does he bring sandpaper to the young Blackhawks lineup, but he also provides timely offense. While it took him nearly half the season last year to start making a real impact on the scoresheet with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he's getting more comfortable in his new surroundings in the Windy City.
He became the only active NHL player to score at least one goal with four 'Original Six' teams (Detroit, Toronto, Boston and Chicago).
#2. Teuvo Teravainen is dishing out the assists
Returning to the franchise that he helped win the Stanley Cup in 2015 as a rookie, Teuvo Teravainen had a pair of power-play assists on Thursday; both were shot passes deflected past Vanecek by his teammates.
#1. Connor Bedard continues to climb the ranks of Blackhawks' history
The first overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, Connor Bedard won the Calder Trophy as the League's best rookie in 2023-24 and is picking up from where he left off.
Thanks to his pair of assists against the Sharks, he now has 15 multi-point games and has tied Hall of Famers Jeremy Roenick and Bobby Hull for third place in team history for that statistic by a teenager.
