The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the LA Kings 6-2 on Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena. With the win, the Maple Leafs improved to 3-1 under Craig Berube. For the Kings, it was a second-straight loss by a high score. The Kings had lost the previous outing against the Ottawa Senators in a wild 8-7 OT game.

Bobby McMann scored twice for the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly, John Tavares and William Nylander scored for the Leafs. Anthony Stolarz made 32 saves for the win.

So, let’s take a look at the three major takeaways from the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 6-2 win over the LA King on Wednesday night.

Three major takeaways from Toronto Maple Leafs win against LA Kings

#3 Stolarz was solid again

One of the biggest storylines for the Toronto Maple Leafs early this season has been Anthony Stolarz. He was pressed into action after starter Joseph Woll went down with an injury a day before the season opener.

Since taking over, Stolarz has been fantastic for Toronto, providing consistent goaltending in three games. His performance on Wednesday night further cemented his place as the Leafs’ starter. In particular, one save stands out as his best.

Midway through the third, with the Leafs up 5-1, Stolarz robbed the Kings’ Quinton Byfield with a brilliant save sliding across the net. The save shows just how well Stolarz is playing at the moment.

#2 The Leafs held off the Kings

The Toronto Maple Leafs took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. However, the LA Kings pushed Toronto from the second period on, eventually getting two goals on the board.

The good news for Toronto was that they were able to hold off the Kings’ attack thanks to solid defense and great goaltending from Stolarz. Eventually, John Tavares added a power play tally late in the third to seal the game at 6-2.

#1 The offense got the job done

The Maple Leafs’ offense showed up, with the big guns getting on the board. Nylander, Matthews, Rielly and Tavares scored, while Mitch Marner got three assists on the night. Also, Max Domi and Jake McCabe got two assists apiece.

The goal total bodes well for Toronto, as the top-heavy lineup had yet to produce a significant goal output this season. In particular, Matthews got his first goal of the season. The Leafs will hope that the goal sparks Matthews to go on a hot streak.

The Maple Leafs will be in action again on Saturday night against their Original Six rivals, the New York Rangers, at the Scotiabank Arena. The game promises to be a tough-checking affair.
