The Vancouver Canucks weren't in a "Brotherly Love" kind of mood on Saturday, taking on the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center in what was the first game for the hosts in front of their fans this season.
The Canucks spoiled the party, defeating the Flyers by a 3-0 final score thanks to another strong performance between the pipes from first-year goaltender Kevin Lankinen.
For the Flyers, it was their fourth straight setback. Meanwhile, it was the second straight win for the Canucks.
Vancouver's Nils Hoglander opened the scoring, tallying his second goal of the young campaign by easily re-directing Elias Pettersson's pass at the side of the net past Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson:
Brock Boeser would soon net his third goal midway through the second period:
Less than a minute later, Kiefer Sherwood scored his first goal as a member of the Canucks, firing a shot past Ersson immediately after Vancouver won an offensive zone faceoff:
The frustrations of the home faithful were palpable, as several loud and noticeable boos were heard during the third period as the Flyers failed to beat Lankinen.
Here's a closer look at three big takeaways from Vancouver's win over Philadelphia on Saturday.
3 biggest takeaways from Vancouver Canucks' 3-0 win over Philadelphia Flyers
#1. Canucks took advantage of a tired Flyers team
The Flyers didn't have their legs underneath them during the game's opening period; they played Thursday on the West Coast against the Seattle Kraken and were noticeably sluggish.
The Canucks fired 10 shots on goal during the period while repeatedly hemming the Flyers into their own zone.
#2. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen is making the most of his one-year contract
The Canucks sought outside goaltending help thanks to Thatcher Demko's injury and Arturs Silovs' struggles. He was subsequently signed to a one-year contract worth just under $900K by General Manager Patrik Allvin, and he's impressed in his short tenure with the club so far.
He's been between the pipes for both of Vancouver's wins and has a sparking 1.28 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.
“I’m feeling comfortable and confident ever since I got here from just knowing some of the guys,” Lankinen said via The Province. “They’ve been great and making me feel good and it’s fun to play behind this team and the system. We’re proving it but obviously there’s still more work to be done."
#3. Tyler Myers joined select Canucks franchise company
The towering defenseman appeared in his 1,000th career game and became just the second Canucks player to register a point in the milestone contest since Marcus Naslund did so in 2008.
“It means more to do it with this group — I love this group," Myers said. "Thinking back to the summer and not knowing what it [future] was going to look like, it’s just a great night. I got real antsy the latter have of the second period and we got a little loose and it’s just getting better with situational awareness.”
The Canucks continue their regular season schedule by taking on the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Tuesday.
