The New York Rangers are one game away from heading home for the summer. New York dropped Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals 3-2, giving the Florida Panthers a critical 3-2 series lead.
While the Rangers made the game close, their late push wasn’t enough to send the game to overtime for the fourth time in a row.
With the Rangers now playing for their playoff lives, here's a closer look at three players who disappointed in Game 5.
3 NY Rangers players who let their team down in Game 5
#1. Artemi Panarin
The story in this series has been the lack of scoring from the NY Rangers. In particular, the Breadman has been quiet. His 120 points in the regular season have not amounted to much in this series against Florida.
While Panarin has registered three assists, his lack of goals has stood out as one of the reasons why the Presidents’ Trophy winners are down 3-2 in the series.
While Panarin registered four shots on net in Game 5, he wasn’t able to be the difference-maker he usually is. He’ll need to pick up his efforts for Game 6 if the Rangers are to force a Game 7.
#2. Braden Schneider
The duo of Braden Schneider and K’Andre Miller got burned in the third period on Anton Lundell’s go-ahead goal.
The goal was the product of a turnover in the Panthers’ zone that led to a scoring chance that didn’t have much to it, except for the fact that no one picked up Lundell in front of the net.
The shot from Eetu Luostarinen went through traffic, finding Lundell’s stick at the side of the net. While Schneider went down to block the shot, he didn’t manage to do so. He didn’t notice Lundell standing behind him, ready to pounce on the puck.
Meanwhile, Miller arrived late to the party. His frustration was visible as he realized he was late for the play. These defensive lapses have proved costly for the Rangers, leaving them with few chances to get back into the series.
#3. Vincent Trocheck
Trocheck has played well throughout the postseason. But the last couple of games have shown a weaker side of the Rangers’ forward.
In Game 5, he was unable to get it done on the scoresheet and defensively. On the scoresheet, Trocheck registered two shots on goal. Defensively, he was a minus-1. That minus-1 was a costly turnover in the Panthers’ zone during the first period.
With the Rangers up 1-0, Trocheck failed to corral the puck at the boards, leading to a costly giveaway. The Panthers came back the other way, catching the Rangers’ defenders pinching up on the play. Then, Gustav Forsling moved up on the play as the trailer, tying the game on a hard shot.
That one crucial defensive miscue erased the momentum the Rangers had accrued up to that point, especially when considering the Rangers had scored a shorthanded goal.
For the Panthers, they have been able to capitalize on those defensive miscues, giving them opportunities they shouldn’t have gotten.
Game 6 between the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers takes place at Amerant Bank Arena on Saturday.
