The Pittsburgh Penguins are back in the mix for the playoffs.
With the NHL trade deadline on Friday (Mar. 3) afternoon, the Penguins will need to make a significant upgrade to improve their odds in the cut-throat Eastern Conference. The biggest improvements they need are on the blue line and in the net.
Trade Options for Pittsburgh Penguins
Here are three trade options for the Pittsburgh Penguins before the NHL trade deadline on Mar. 3:
#1 Thatcher Demko
The Pittsburgh Penguins should consider trading for Thatcher Demko, the young and promising goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks.
The Penguins have struggled with goaltending in recent years, and Demko has shown flashes of brilliance in his short career so far. He posted a .935 save percentage in the playoffs two seasons ago and has continued to impress this season.
The Penguins have a lot of talent and a desire to win now, so Demko could be the piece they need to solidify their goaltending and make a deep playoff run. While it would likely require a significant package to acquire Demko, he could be worth the investment.
#2 Matt Dumba
The Pittsburgh Penguins should consider trading for Matt Dumba, the talented defenseman for the Minnesota Wild.
The Penguins have a strong offensive core but could use some help on the blue line, and Dumba could provide that. He has a knack for jumping up into the play and contributing offensively, as well as a physical presence at his own end.
Dumba is also signed to a reasonable contract, which could be appealing to the Penguins given their salary cap constraints. While it would likely require giving up significant assets to acquire Dumba, his skills and experience could be invaluable for the Penguins in their quest for another Stanley Cup championship.
#3 Travis Hamonic
The Pittsburgh Penguins should consider trading for Travis Hamonic, the veteran defenseman for the Ottawa Senators.
The Penguins have been hit hard by injuries on their blue line this season, so Hamonic could provide some much-needed depth and stability. He's a strong defender who's known for his physical play and shot-blocking ability. He could help the Penguins' penalty kill, which has struggled this season.
Hamonic is also signed to a reasonable contract. While he may not be the most dynamic player, he could be a solid addition to the Penguins' roster and help them make a deep playoff run.
