NHL training camps are set to open in September and there are still plenty of impact players without contracts. At this time of the offseason, most veterans will have to sign professional tryouts (PTO), which give them a chance to participate in training camp and try to earn a roster spot.
Toronto has reportedly signed forward Steven Lorentz to a PTO but here are three more players the Maple Leafs could sign to a PTO.
3 PTO signings that make sense for Toronto Maple Leafs
#1. James van Riemsdyk, LW
James van Riemsdyk is one of the top players still available and is a left-winger, which is a position of need for the Maple Leafs. Nick Robertson is still an RFA and has requested a trade, which is why left wing is a key position.
Van Riemsdyk can be the Maple Leafs' third-line left winger and play on the power play to add some depth scoring. He also played in Toronto from 2012 until 2018 and was a fan favorite.
Last season with the Boston Bruins, he recorded 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points.
#2. Mike Hoffman, RW

Mike Hoffman has skated in 745 NHL games but is still a free agent.
The veteran winger has struggled the past couple of seasons, as last year with the San Jose Sharks, he recorded 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points.
Hoffman is a former 36-goal and 70-point player in the NHL, so he has proven he can be an impact offensive player. However, he could be a middle-six forward for Toronto who adds some depth scoring and help out on the power play.
#3. Cal Clutterbuck, RW
If the Toronto Maple Leafs are after a veteran who can play the fourth line and be gritty, Cal Clutterbuck makes sense for a PTO.
Clutterbuck has skated in 1,064 games and can add some veteran leadership to the locker room and lineup. He recorded seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 82 games with the New York Islanders last season.
Although he plays a similar role to Ryan Reaves, Clutterbuck is a better hockey player than Reaves and would be cheaper. Adding the competition could make sense for the Maple Leafs.
