The Boston Bruins have yet to sign RFA goalie Jeremy Swayman to a contract extension. The goalie is reportedly demanding $10 million on the new deal.
“Jeremy Swayman, looking for $10 million a year,” WEEI’'s Rich Keefe said, via Audacy. “That is the scoop that I have. He is looking for $10 million a year. That would put him with Sergei Bobrovsky and Carey Price [at the top of the goalie market].”
Swayman is one of the best goalies in the NHL, but that would be a hefty contract. Here are three reasons why Boston shouldn't give him the money he wants.
3 reasons why Boston Bruins shouldn't give Jeremy Swayman $10 million
#1. Doesn't have much leverage
Jeremy Swayman is an RFA, meaning his rights belong to Boston.
Instead of a long-term contract worth $10 million per season that he desires, a short-term agreement with less money makes more sense.
With Swayman being an RFA, he doesn't have much leverage to make demands.
#2. Not many goalies fetch $10 million
Carey Price and Sergei Bobrovsky are the only two goaltenders making at least $10 million entering the 2024-25 season. Andrei Vasilevskiy ($9.5 million), Connor Hellebuyck ($8.5 million), and Ilya Sorokin ($8.25 million) are the next three goalies in terms of salary.
Swayman is just as good as Juuse Saros, who signed an eight-year deal worth $7.74 million per season.
#3. Would handicap Boston's salary cap
If the Bruins give Swayman $10 million a year, Boston's salary cap will take a big hit.
The Bruins currently have just over $8 million in cap space, so Boston couldn't even afford the $10 million Swayman wants.
The Bruins would have to trade some players to make the money work on a potential deal with Swayman if they do end up giving him $10 million.
