The Boston Bruins lost a tough road game 4-0 against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday at Bridgestone Arena. For the Preds, the win marked their first victory of the season. Meanwhile, the Bruins were shut out, failing to get much going on the night.
Ryan O’Reilly, Tommy Novak, Gustav Nyquist and Luke Evangelist scored for the Preds. The Bruins got 38 saves from Jeremy Swayman who did his best to keep his team in the game.
Here's a closer look at three reasons why Boston lost to Nashville as part of the Frozen Frenzy event.
3 reasons why Boston Bruins lost against Nashville Predators
#3. The Bruins came out flat
The usual tough-checking, relentless forechecking from the Boston Bruins took the night off against the Nashville Predators. The Preds got the lead late in the first period after breaking down the Bruins’ defensive scheme.
O’Reilly’s goal came early into a power play in which Boston could not stop Nashville from moving the puck around. The Bruins looked confused chasing the Predators players around their own zone, eventually leaving the point man open for a long shot.
Then, O’Reilly capitalized on the point shot, leading to a tip-in for the game’s first goal. The trend continued all night, as the Bruins chased the puck around, unable to get much going.
#2. The Bruins’ penalties derailed their momentum
In total, the Bruins gave up six power play opportunities. While the Predators only scored on one chance, the constant penalty killing derailed the Bruins’ momentum.
It’s worth pointing out that Boston did a good job of killing off five of six chances. However, taking so many penalties is not a recipe for winning. As such, the Bruins’ lack of discipline was a major factor in their shutout loss.
#1. The scoring has dried up
The Bruins’ scoring has seemingly dried up this season. Thus far, the Bruins have scored less than three goals in three of their seven games. In games where they have scored more than three goals, the Bruins have had mixed results, like their 6-4 loss to the Florida Panthers.
Elias Lindholm, the Bruins’ offseason addition, has failed to deliver the expected results thus far. It remains to be seen if and when the Bruins offense will pick up, potentially offsetting costly defensive miscues.
The Bruins face a tough test against the Dallas Stars in their next outing on Thursday at TD Garden.
