Back in early July, Nick Robertson kicked off free agency with a trade request, eager for a fresh start with another team. Despite that, Toronto GM Brad Treliving made it clear that he would prefer to retain Robertson, explaining that with the team in need of left wingers, the Maple Leafs want him around.
A trade didn't come to fruition, with little movement on contract negotiations as well. However, reports emerged Tuesday that the Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson came to an agreement on a one-year contract worth $875,000.
Given the contract value and the hopes the team has for Robertson going forward, there are several reasons to believe the contract could be a massive bargain.
Three reasons why Nick Robertson's $875,000 contract could be a bargain for Toronto
#1: More opportunities for success
One of the biggest motivating factors behind Nick Robertson's trade request was the lack of opportunities he had with the Maple Leafs up until now. This season, however, Brad Treliving made it clear that the franchise wants to see, and needs, Robertson on their roster.
Given that he has shown flashes of brilliance in the past, logging 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) over 56 games last season and that he was able to do so with limited opportunities, he could be far better with an increased role.
#2: A full healthy season
So far, Nick Robertson has split time between the NHL and AHL since being drafted 53rd by the Maple Leafs in 2019. In addition, he also dealt with a slew of injuries on his way up the prospect ladder. He suffered a knee injury and a broken leg in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022.
With the team eager to give him a bigger role, this could very well be the first time we get to see Robertson in the NHL for an entire season. In addition, if he's able to remain healthy, the $875,000 valuation on his contract could wind up looking like a steal over a full season with the Maple Leafs.
#3: Trade value
When Nick Robertson requested a trade in early July, it was clear that there was interest around the league. Had the Maple Leafs not locked him down to an extension, Robertson likely would have drawn a number of offer sheets from teams.
Given that, and the $875,000 value, Robertson's trade value could skyrocket with impressive play. With a team-friendly contract, strong production numbers could open up a world of possibilities for the Leafs in the trade market once the season gets underway.
