The Edmonton Oilers earned a hard-fought, come-from-behind win on Wednesday to even the Western Conference finals at two games each. Edmonton’s resilience punctuated the Oilers’ 5-2 victory.
After being down 2-0 in the first period, the Oilers turned up the heat to tie the game. Then, in a flash, Edmonton went up 4-2 in less than a minute.
With the series now headed back to Texas, here's a closer look at what went right for the Edmonton Oilers in Game 4.
3 things the Edmonton Oilers got right in Game 4
#1. The lineup changes worked
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch’s lineup shakeup worked. While the adjustments were highly criticized prior to the game, they ultimately panned out.
The reinsertion of Ryan McLeod into the lineup turned out to be a savvy choice. McLeod was a healthy scratch in Game 3 but seemed to come back strong for Game 4, notching his first postseason goal after tapping home a rebound.
McLeod deserves credit for staying with the play, especially with the mad scramble in the front of the net. Also, Corey Perry did well, notching an assist, while Philip Broberg did not seem out of place.
Overall, the lineup changes yielded positive results. Still, it remains to be seen if these players can sustain their good performances in Game 5.
#2. Skinner came good in the end
Stuart Skinner got off to a shaky start, allowing two goals within five minutes of play. But when it seemed like the Stars were going to run away with the game, Skinner made a key save, keeping the game at 2-0.
The fact that Skinner was able to keep it together at that point allowed the Oilers to rebound and tie the game heading into the first intermission. From there, Skinner did enough to keep the Stars from getting back in the game.
In the end, Skinner wasn’t overly tested. He faced 22 shots but made the saves he had to. That’s the type of goaltending the Oilers need, especially when they play solid defense in front of him. If the Oilers can continue to play solid defense, Skinner should be up to the task moving forward.
#3. Oilers’ stars showed up
Leon Draisaitl had a goal. Connor McDavid had three assists. Evan Bouchard scored. Zach Hyman assisted on a goal while registering five shots on goal. That type of performance allowed the Oilers to throw a balanced attack against Dallas.
While the Edmonton Oilers’ depth players chipped in as well, the stars did their job. In short, the Oilers played a fantastic game following the disastrous first ten minutes or so. As long as the Oilers’ stars continue to push as hard as they did, they can match Dallas’ talented lineup.
Game 5 takes place at American Airlines Center on Friday.
