The Toronto Maple Leafs training camp is scheduled to begin in September, but Toronto still has a few things left to address. The Maple Leafs are coming off a disappointing first-round playoff exit once again.
The team had a relatively quiet offseason, aside from the signings of Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Anthony Stolarz. Ahead of camp, here are three things Toronto must address.
3 things Toronto Maple Leafs must address ahead of 2024 training camp
#1. Nick Robertson's situation
Nick Robertson remains an RFA and has requested a trade, as he told the Maple Leafs he wouldn't be re-signing.
Robertson was drafted in the second round of the 2019 NHL draft, but he hasn't been given a major role with Toronto, which is why he requested a trade.
However, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has shown no desire to trade him.
"I have certainly known that there was some frustration with Nick, but we look at Nick as an excellent player," Treliving said, via TSN. "There is a great opportunity for Nick here. We need him to be a good player for us. I am not going to get into any speculation or public back-and-forth. We will just leave it at that and continue to move forward."
But Toronto will need to either re-sign him or trade him by the start of the season.
#2. Mitch Marner's future
Mitch Marner is entering the final year of his deal and his future in Toronto has been a major question.
Marner wants to remain in Toronto, but he has been the subject of trade rumors. The Maple Leafs likely won't give a definitive answer on Marner's future, but getting an answer to silence some questions going forward will be key.
#3. How the goalie tandem will work?
The Maple Leafs signed Anthony Stolarz to form a goalie tandem with Joseph Woll. However, neither has been a true starter in the NHL, so how the goalie tandem will look is an intriguing question.
Woll has struggled to stay healthy in his career, so how Toronto will deal with the goalie tandem will play a key role in how well the Maple Leafs do this season.
