The Edmonton Oilers underwent a bit of a roster overhaul this summer. While the team re-signed several key players and notably signed star forward Leon Draisaitl to a contract extension that will kick in next season, newly appointed GM Stan Bowman has been working behind the scenes to bolster the team's roster and fill the gaps left by outgoing players.
Ahead of the start of training camps, and the team's preseason slate, which will begin Sunday when the Oilers face the Winnipeg Jets, the team's prospects are fresh off the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, British Columbia.
With training camp right around the corner, here are four prospects who impressed in the 2024 Young Stars Classic who could earn training camp invites.
Four Edmonton Oilers prospects who could get training camp invites following Young Stars Classic
#1: William Nicholl
With the 196th pick of this year's NHL draft, the Oilers selected Canadian center William Nicholl. While much of the hype heading into this year's Young Stars Classic centered around first-round pick Sam O'Reilly, Nicholl impressed in Penticton.
Although he's just 18, the OHL product has shown IQ and skills beyond his age. As a two-way forward, the team could look to speed up his development by offering him a training camp invite.
#2: Max Wanner
When looking at how the Edmonton Oilers' top prospects played in Penticton, one would be remiss not to mention Max Wanner. Last season, Wanner spent 68 games with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, logging 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists).
This summer, in Penticton, his experience paid off as he showed remarkable IQ for a 21-year-old. As he indicated while speaking with media members this week, he's hopeful that he can have a bigger impact on the ice this year when compared to years past.
#3: Nathaniel Day
Drafted in the sixth round, with the 184th pick of the 2023 NHL Draft, 19-year-old Nathaniel Day is certainly one to watch. Day spent the last three years with the Flint Firebirds, racking up 3,124 minutes on the ice over 54 games.
At the 2024 Young Stars Classic, he was able to stop 28 of the 30 shots that came his way. While the Edmonton Oilers' netminding unit is already finalized for the season ahead, bringing in Day to give him some experience at a pro level could be worthwhile.
#4: Nate Corbet
Undrafted prospect Nate Corbet certainly made a name for himself in Penticton this month. On Monday, he was involved in his third fight, turning heads as he threw it down with Mark Liwiski.
While Corbet is just 18 years old, and logged just five points over 51 games in the WHL last year, tough-nosed defenscemen are always a hot commodity in the NHL. While a training camp invite may be a longshot, if invited, it could give the Edmonton Oilers staff an opportunity to see how he performs alongside the best of the best.
