The Boston Bruins get set to close training camp by making the final roster decisions in order to trim their lineup to 23 players. This situation means making a few tough choices given the number of potential NHL-caliber players still in camp.
As such, here’s a look at the top 3 confirmed Boston Bruins roster cuts ahead of Opening Night on October 8 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.
3 confirmed Boston Bruins roster cuts to form 23-man regular season roster
#3. Jeffrey Viel
Viel has had a decent showing in camp. He’s proven to be a hardworking forward looking for an opportunity to become an everyday NHLer. However, he’s vying for a spot amid a stacked Boston Bruins lineup. So, there’s not much opportunity for Viel to play, at least this season.
He was placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Providence on Sunday. Regular playing time in Providence will help Viel, especially if and when injuries become an issue for the Bruins. He could be among the first call-ups this season.
#2. Bill Sweezey
Sweezey, while a decent defenseman, has not made enough strides to take over a job on the Bruins’ blue line. It’s hard to imagine Sweezey leapfrogging Mason Lohrei or Andrew Peeke.
Unless the Bruins start the year with significant injuries on the blue line, Sweezey was also placed on waivers by the Bruins on Sunday for the purpose of assignment to Providence.
#1. Brandon Bussi
Bussi was penciled in as the Boston Bruins’ backup goaltender. However, Jeremy Swayman’s signing has changed that. It was highly unlikely the Bruins carry three goalies to start the year, and have since confirmed that by placing Bussi on waivers to be assgined to Providence.
The Bruins will likely deploy Joonas Korpisalo on Opening Night, unless Swayman is ready to go. But since Swayman did not see any preseason action, he may start the season backing up Korpisalo until he’s up to speed.
That situation means that Bussi is the odd man out in the Bruins’ crease this season. Nevertheless, fans haven’t seen the last of Bussi. If a Bruins’ netminder suffers an injury, Bussi will be first up.
